Cessation Resources

National and tribal cessation resources — NRT, medications, quitlines, and counseling.

There is more than one path to quitting. These national and tribal resources can support you wherever you are in the process.

Quitlines

Free phone-based counseling is available in every state. Trained counselors help you build a quit plan and stay on track. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or visit your state quitline.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Patches, gum, lozenges, and inhalers deliver small amounts of nicotine to ease cravings without the harmful chemicals in smoke. Many are available over the counter and may be covered through IHS or Medicaid.

Prescription Medications

Medications like varenicline (Chantix) and bupropion can reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your provider about whether these might be right for you. Both are on the IHS formulary.

Counseling and Behavioral Support

One-on-one counseling, group sessions, and quitlines provide support and strategies for managing triggers. Combining counseling with medication is often the most effective approach.

Tribal Cessation Programs

Many tribal nations operate their own tobacco cessation programs, designed by and for community members. These often incorporate cultural practices alongside evidence-based approaches — combining the medicine bag with Western medicine.

Integrating Traditional and Western Medicine

Many people find strength in combining medical approaches with traditional practices. Your path to quitting commercial tobacco can honor both — and often, reconnecting with ceremony is what makes the difference.
