Lung Cancer Screening
Screenings that catch lung cancer early — when it's most treatable.
Regular screening can catch lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable. If you smoke or have smoked, screening may be one of the most important things you can do for your health.
Low-Dose CT Screening
Low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer before symptoms appear. If you’re between 50 and 80 and have a history of heavy smoking, you may qualify for annual screening at no cost under most insurance plans and through IHS.
Who Should Get Screened
You may be eligible if you:
- Are 50–80 years old
- Currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years
- Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (one pack per day for 20 years, or equivalent)
Breathing Tests
Spirometry tests measure how well your lungs are working. They’re quick, painless, and can help identify conditions like COPD before symptoms become severe. Ask for one at your next health visit.
Finding Screening Near You
Many Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities and tribal health centers offer lung health screenings. Urban Indian health organizations often provide screening as well. Ask your healthcare provider about what’s available in your area.
